I’m passionate about helping students grow as musicians while making lessons engaging, rewarding, and fun. I have been teaching since 2023, and I’ve taught students in a wide variety of settings, including private lessons, classroom instruction, after-school rehearsals, and online learning. My teaching philosophy centres around individual growth and enjoyment. Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the very first time or already have years of experience, my goal is for you to leave each lesson feeling more knowledgeable, confident, motivated, and excited about music than when you arrived. I work with students of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to more advanced musicians looking to strengthen their technique, musicianship, improvisation, ensemble playing, or audition preparation. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals and interests, helping build both strong fundamentals and a lifelong enjoyment of music. From my very first week in Grade 9 Regional Arts music class, I knew music education was the path for me. I also come from a family of educators — many of my family members have earned or are pursuing their Ontario teaching certification — and that passion for education has always been a major part of my life. I discovered music at a young age, being attached at the hip with my plastic drums at age 5, to joining the choir as an elementary student, before eventually finding my home as a trumpet and brass musician. I earned my Bachelor of Music degree from Humber College, where I focused not only on developing as a performer but also as an educator. Lessons are available both in person and online, depending on the student's preference and availability. Outside of music, I’m a big fan of baseball (Go Jays Go!), sports, video games, and fishing. I look forward to helping students of all ages and backgrounds grow in their musical journey and making music a positive and rewarding part of their lives.","image":"8e7304f8-28b4-48ef-a4be-7562c305ded8.jpg","name":"Matthew C","styles":"Classical, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Marching Band, Orchestral, Big Band, Latin, Movie/Video Game Scores, All Styles","instruments":"Trumpet/Trumpet/Trombone/Tuba/Euphonium/French Horn","levels":"Advanced, Beginner, Intermediate","languages":"English","DiffInMiles":19.589833767,"id":"51208","city":"Toronto","state":"Ontario","description":"I’m Matthew, a trumpet and brass musician/educator who has been performing jazz, funk, classical, and Latin music throughout the GTA for over a decade. I've been involved in music since I was a kid, starting piano lessons when I was 6 years old and joining wind band when I got into middle school. I've got experience with all sorts of instruments, as I started my wind instrument journey on saxophone, briefly played the clarinet in the beginning of high school, and finally found my way to French Horn in grade 10. I studied up to RCM Level 8 in Piano and Level 9 in Theory, and switched to French Horn lessons for the latter half of high school. I completed my Undergraduate at Wilfrid Laurier University in Classical Performance on the French Horn, and am currently working on my Master's in Performance at the University of Toronto. I'm fairly new in my musical teaching career, but I have given private and group swimming lessons for many years. I've visited high schools and ran music workshops as part of my Undergraduate Degree, and given a handful of private French Horn lessons to family and friends. I've started to branch out to other instruments of the brass family, playing tenor horn (very similar to the baritone/euphonium) in a community brass band and picking up trumpet in my spare time. Most of my expertise lies in brass instruments as well as piano, and I'm happy to share my love of music with anyone who wants to learn! As a teacher, I believe the most important thing is to meet students where they're at, both musically and emotionally. My job is to facilitate learning and growth for all skill levels, and to develop musical technique so that you can better connect with what you're playing. I believe you should always be playing music that you *want* to play, so I take a very collaborative approach to choosing and working on repertoire.
