Hi, I'm Derek. I hold a Doctoral degree (DMA) in Composition at the University of Alberta and a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Ottawa. I have been teaching music for many years to a wide variety of students, from university courses to young children, building a track record of success. My teaching philosophy is that music is for everyone; it should be challenging, highly expressive, and most importantly, fun! I focus on building rock-solid fundamentals in a supportive, energetic atmosphere, drawing on my performance background across a wide range of styles, including classical and popular music. Outside of music, you can find me enjoying strategy in video games and Magic: The Gathering.
